In order to understand pre-production, production and post-production techniques you will have to identify what the requirements of all three areas are (Task 1).
Pre-production is the planning stage of a video production or for that matter any media product. It is the stage where you decide what kind of video product you want to make and the resources you will need to make it. It is also the time to consider what it will cost to make and the timescale you have to produce it.
All video productions need a careful planning stage, otherwise the various elements required for production might not be available or the locations you want to use may be closed.
Your pre-production will be undertaken with a team and it is vital that you meet regularly with your team.
In the pre-production process you will need to produce a range of documents that will help you in the production stage.
These documents consist of:
Proposal – initial ideas that sell your ideas to a client
Treatment – a detailed development of your proposal
Production schedule – dates for things to happen
Storyboard – a visual representation of your idea
Shooting script – details of camera angles and sound
Risk assessment – potential problems when recording and editing
Location recognisance record – (recce) a plan of the location to be used
Budget – Assuming that you must hire the equipment how much will the whole thing cost?
Booking sheets – to ensure equipment is available on time.
All of these documents are vital in the pre-production planning process.
You should keep a diary or log of your pre-production work as this will help you later in this unit.
